Transport group calls for relief road

A TRANSPORT group backing the controversial plans to build a new M4 relief road is pushing for construction to start sooner rather than later.

South East Wales Transport alliance (sewta)) has announced that it endorses the idea of encouraging early construction of the new M4 south of Newport.

The M4 relief road will be subject to a public inquiry before permissions is granted.

But sewta planning manager Christian Schmidt said: " We are waiting for the Assembly to finalise the plans and we hope that they take account of our views and the impact on local roads."

The support was immediately attacked by environmentalists Gwent Wildlife Trust which is dead against the proposals for a new M4. which would cut through acres of environmentally sensitive land.

The controversy is likely to build up in coming months as both sides set out their stall in advance of any inquiry.
