ROBIN DAVEY SAYS: Dragons may have turned the corner

IT just could be that the lean days are coming to an end for Newport Gwent Dragons as fans eagerly anticipate the start of the new season.

It's been a struggle since the first season of regional rugby for the Dragons just to keep their heads above water. They have suffered from financial difficulties and a perceived lack of ambition off the field and insufficient talent on it.

A heavy injury list has exposed a lack of depth and only last season they went eight games without winning, having to rely on youngsters filling in against superior opposition.

But it really does look as though those sometimes desperate times are about to end after the squad has been considerably strengthened.

No-one is going to suggest the Dragons will win the Heineken Cup or the Magners League, but they are going to be more competitive and the squad does possess more depth.

Much needed quality has been added with the arrival of four New Zealanders, all with Super 14 or 12 experience while some decent home based players have signed up as well.

Head coach Paul Turner has been to New Zealand to bring players in who can stiffen the side. You can't blame him for that and all this banging on about too many non-Welsh players is considerably exaggerated.

If the required ability is not there, if there are too many youngsters involved you can't be expected to carry on in the same vein. On that evidence there is nothing wrong with signing a few overseas players especially when England and France, with whom Welsh teams have to compete in Europe, have far greater budgets.

So Turner has drafted in from New Zealand Tom Willis, a former All Blacks captain and hooker, number eight Grant Webb, lock Hoani MacDonald and outside half James Arlidge.

Also signed up are Shaun Connor, Tal Selley and Marc Stcherbina, three players with considerable experience and ability, reserve hooker Duane Goodfield and the possibility of a young Aussie back, which means the Dragons will have eight or nine new players, though MacDonald will be a month late joining up.

The New Zealand forwards will provide more power and ball carrying ability, sadly lacking last season, Arlidge and Connor will give the direction which was missing and Stcherbina and Selley the absent dash, verve and experience.

I've spoken to many fans in pubs, on the golf course and even at petrol stations who are actually looking forward to the season with a sense of anticipation. Now that makes a change.

At the risk of offending the Dragons' New Zealand contingent what a joy it was to watch the Springboks triumph in their own back yard courtesy of Ricky Januarie's glorious solo try.

And what about the NZ infrastructure? Internationals grounds with a capacity of little more than 40,000 with single tier stands which they can't even fill. The World Cup there in 2011 looks like being absolute chaos.

I still think the Dragons have failed to fill the gap left by Paul Emerick. Last year, on the few times he played, he seemed the only back capable of breaking down defences. Whilst all reasonable signinings I do not think that Arlidge, connor, Selley or Stcherbina bring the necessary guile we need to score enough points for us to be competitive with the other welsh or irish regions, let alone take on Toulouse!

Without doubt the pack have been strengthened, but I am still concerned over the props (currently only 2 on either side fit). However it is the ability to score points(or lack of) that really concerns me.

I am not optimistic, but will support them anyway, and I hope they prove me wrong!

Robin like most rugby journalist are now in the "silly season" Robin is playing the role of fox and hound. All the players signed are not required by their clubs either in Kiwi land or Wales and lets hope the Kiwis are better than the Scarlet cast offs. Or we'll rename the Draagons the Scarlet 2nd XV. Over the past 7 years the Dragons have left themselves down without any pace in their back line and with the loss of Mr Brown.

cant wait for the new season to re-establish ourselves as the worst team in wales.
if we cant get substantial financial backing, i think we should accept the enevitable that wales can only support 3 regional teams.

Games won vs Welsh opposition last year:

    Cardiff - 4
    Dragons - 3
    Scarlets - 3
    'The One True Region' <snicker> - 2

    Magner's League games won:

    Cardiff: 12
    Dragons: 7
    Llanelli: 7
    Ospreys: 6

But don't let the facts get in the way of a good, negative, rant when we should all be supporting what is, potentially, the Munster of Wales...

I can't wait for the new season as a Gwent fan.

But don't let that fact get

We all know the ospreys had bigger fish to fry, and put out youth teams on several occasions, remove the blinkers and admit we aint got a team, or a decent ground, i think i could support a merged newport / llanelli as we are both struggling, and possibly ground share with cardiff citys new stadium, then we may make progress, too many very average players earning handsome, undeserving salaries.

And before you mention the name, we aint gotta be newport gwent dragons, or gwent dragons, but simply THE DRAGONS.

Wake up adolf - the Ospreys had bigger fish to fry? They didn't do to well at the frying did they? And please don't give me any cobblers about EDF cups. Youth team?!? What did the Dragons put out for half the season due to injuries? You obviously didn't watch too many games last season and if you think Gwent, with the most clubs in the country, should be merged with a western team you really haven't thought this through, have you?

With you on the name 100% though, at least you got one thing right...

AT least ospreys fans had some excitement, whilst we always had the terror of living through 80 minutes, its not even fun anymore, its predictably bad, season after season, mediocre at best, and you can see where its going, 5 years, no more dragons
Posted by: monte_fisto, Newport on 8:31am Thu 17 Jul 08
What excitement? Have you even been to the graveyard that is the Liberty?

If we had scored a handful more bonus points in our worst season ever we would hacve been the second placed Welsh region - Fact.

There are more clubs, and more Premiership clubs in Gwent than anywhere else in Wales, if you get your petulent, naysaying wish where are all these players going to get their shot? Sale?
