Dispersal order extended
A DISPERSAL order covering Cwmbran town centre was extended for six months.
The order, introduced to tackle anti-social behaviour and bad driving in the town, had been due to expire on Sunday.
Cwmbran's crime and disorder reduction officer, PC Darrell Dewar, said: "Even though the number of calls have reduced, they haven't reduced to an acceptable level."
Incidents of anti-social behaviour in the town centre fell from 342 between June and December 2007 to 271 between January and June this year.
However, police felt this figure had not dropped enough to warrant removing the order, so took the decision to extend it.
Under the order, if people are dispersed and return within 24 hours, they could face arrest and a maximum six-month sentence or £5,000 fine.
Over the past six months, 131 people were dispersed as well as 80 drivers and ten were issued warnings that if they returned, their car would be confiscated.
PC Dewar said: "I'm pleased to say they took the warnings and never came back. We will have no hesitation in confiscating vehicles."
The figures were examined by chief superintendent Paul Symes along with deputy chief executive at Torfaen Council, Paul Matthews, before the decision to extend the order was made.
"We feel we still need these powers to combat the problems," added PC Dewar.
The area covered by the order is bounded by Llewelyn Road, Caradoc Road, Glyndwr Road and Tudor Road as well as all town centre car parks.
PC Dewar said the powers were necessary to discourage the minority of people causing problems in Cwmbran.
"We don't want to discourage young people from coming to the town centre or hanging around together, we are urging youngsters to behave themselves and not cause anti-social problems."

Sounds like more sensible policing to me! remove the problem from the only area in Cwmbran covered by CCTV and force the anti social behaviour into residential areas, not covered by surveillance.
I'm sure the police will happily get out of thier cars and patrol these areas on foot, in an attempt to reduce anti social behaviour where it affects people most.

Glad I am not the only cynic, Sarah. We have a longstanding battle with the useless police at Cwmbran, Darryl Dewar included. We have people having sex in a turning point by our house in full view of passers by, damage to our cars by speeding kids, drug dealing goiogn on( and convictions made for this by Gwent police) illegal dumping, raves, loud music, bar b ques and even people sleeping in the area where we are meant to be able to turn our cars and what do we get told by these useless police and corrupt Labour Council?
That it costs too much to for them to do anything simple like put a collapsible bollard in the road.
Its time these idiots realiused they are meant to act for us.
We pay our council tax to have our cars damaged, our sleep disturbed and our property stolen.
Shame on you Gwent Police and Torfaen Council you are not fit for purpose.
