    Residents shocked at travellers' arrival

    The travellers

OAKDALE residents were shocked after a group of travellers set up camp at a business park over the weekend.

According to locals, around 15 caravans started arriving at the site on Enterprise Way from about 3pm on Friday afternoon.

Residents said the travellers are accompanied by 11 dogs, which have been barking loudly into the early hours of the morning.

There are also a couple of scrap vehicles, which residents say are being driven loudly around the site.

Carol Hatton, 62, of nearby Bronwydd, said: "You can imagine how horrified we were when we saw the convoy arrive.

"It's such a quiet and beautiful area, we've never had anything like this before - it was very unexpected.

"The main thing is that we're anxious to know how long they'll be there for."

Local councillors, Allan Pritchard and John Evans said they have visited local residents to reassure them.

Councillor Evans said: "The local residents are wondering how long they are going to be there, they are very concerned about it."

Councillor Pritchard said Caerphilly council has been informed and said environmental officers have already paid a visit to the site.

He added: "I don't want to be alarmist about this.

"I'm just asking residents to be vigilant and to report anything untoward."

Inspector Mark Ryley of Gwent Police said the police had not received any reports as a result of the travellers' stay.

He said police are monitoring the situation and will be making enquiries with the council tomorrow to establish who owns the land.

Animals, the council should go through the site in the early hours with bulldozers, and smash all their little flea ridden caravans down...

Why is that travellers make such a mess? Every site without exception I have seen, is left like a war zone. Mess everywhere ! I'm sure they would be made more welcome if they used bins like the rest of us.

Their caravans are not flea bitten. If you ever get close enough you will see there caravans are quite posh and well looked after. Ive seen worse houses, that I would not let a dog sleep in.
But besides all that. They do leave a mess.
They go around housing estates cutting down a few trees for the householder,
Dump them on the fields and other rubbish they have collected aswell as human waste.

Then there is the mass shoplifting they get up to.
Basically they hit a town rob it blind then move on.
In a few years they will be back again to start over.
    Anyway im off sunbathing.

If I went onto a site like this and set up camp the authorities would soon get me evicted. Why are these so called travellers untouchable?

For God's sake be extra vigilant with your cats and dogs. When these people appear, residents pets go "missing " and they are even taken from your gardens.

This is not alarmist, it is a fact.

Now where are the do-gooders who will tell us off and remind us what angels these people are and how they never bother anyone or do any harm? I'm sure they'll be along in a minute.

I could do with having a few conifers cut down in my garden and having my driveway re-tarmac'd.... I'm sure that they are reliable, trustworthy businessmen at the end of the day...

Because of lily livered liberal political correctness and human rights, what else?

The people in Oakdale will have to be carefull - they will probably mistake the rubbishy cars oakdale residents tend to drive for scrap, and be towing them away! Hillarious! Anyway who cares - its the valleys!

FAO bigben why do people have to start slaggin matches against other parts of the County, at the end of the day it doesnt matter where in the country these folks are they make a mess none the less. The Local Authorities always end up footing the bill which costs thousands. Local Councils have to take a stand and NOT tolerate it at all as soon as they arrive they should have police there to escort them away.

As you say they are protected species. Anyone else that trespassed on privated land and commited criminal damage and dropped litter would be rapidly dealt with.

Recently we have had people fined for dropping an apple core. And there was another case of someone getting a criminal record for leaving his bin lid open 3".

Its little wonder our political & police are held in contempt. They are pretty much a waste of space.

Its one law for us and another for them.

No wonder so many people from outside Newport hate us when your sort post their vile brain dead garbage.

If you are really from Newport, you will realise that we have nothing to shout about when you look at the crime and social depravation down here. If your pathetic comments are anything to go by, you have some serious growing up to do boy.

I apologise to anyone from the Valleys, this piece of dirt doesn't speak for anyone but himself. The fact he will have to suffer his own company for the rest of his life is punishment enough.

    Well said 'Man of Newport'....

These travellers have just moved up the road by my mate, and I can tell you the local community are outraged, which in my opinion they are justified!!

This land must be owned by somebody, therefore it's private!! So why no immediate eviction?

Not meaning to harp on about my break in 3 weeks ago, where approx 3-4k worth of garden equipment, my yellow quad bike, motorbike gear etc was nicked, I would urge people to do their best to lock up everything they own to the best of their ability..... Mind you, in saying that, when they took our gear, especially the quad, everything had been chained to the floor with huge padlocks, which they simply cut through with ease, as well as pulling up the floor!!!!

It's also the thought of these robbing scumbags, hiding somewhere, monitoring your every move.... not nice!!

Something has to be done with these travellers...... can't we just find a remote Island for them, ship them over, and let them live in the filth they are obviously accustomed to? Just a thought!!

Oh and another thing... how come they get away with no tax on their vehicles, or insurance? Also, if we parked a vehicle anywhere nowadays, we would get charged, and if we refused our vehicles would get towed away!! Why doesn't this apply to them!!! Apologies... rant over for now!!
