500 homes planned for Monkey Island
FINAL plans were lodged with Newport city council for more than 500 new homes.
566 units are planned for 26 acres of land at the northern part of the Orb Works off Corporation Road, Lliswerry.
And developers Bryant Homes South Wales have now handed reserved matters plans to the council including details of landscaping, open space, roads and paths on the site, which takes in the area known as Monkey Island.
Bryant Homes are calling the brownfield development The Great Western Wharf Apartments and the area is part of the £30 million Newport East Gateway project overseen by regeneration bosses at Newport Unlimited.
Newport Unlimited say Monkey Island is set to become an ecological reserve, with walkways and park amenities attracting visitors, but the extent of the area to be dedicated to green space is as yet unclear.
Lliswerry ward Councillor Allan Morris said he was adamant the wildlife area must be maintained: "I am determined to safeguard that area as a green space and ecological area as we're building on both sides of the river and this will give wildlife a place to thrive.
"We have plenty of wildlife in the area and we need to allow it to flourish," he said.
Monkey Island got its unusual name because its shape is said to resemble a monkey sitting up.
Two bedroom apartments on The Great Western Wharf site are currently on sale from the Bryant Homes website for £129,995.

why do people harp on about wild life and reserves people need new housein .and yes it will mean more europeans but newport and other towns will have to put up with itits a singe of the times

People "harp on" about wildlife and reserves because they care about nature... We wouldn't need more housing if they stopped letting people into the UK and giving houses away!!!

You have to bear in mind the idea of a nature reserve in Newport is just an excuse not to cut the grass. Note Coming out of Town towards the M4 all of a sudden the grass needed cutting and hey presto problem solved, they put up signs saying nature reserve - just another excuse to save money and in turn keeping Newport looking scruffy.

Why do we need another housing development. The two in the centre are in trouble, there is [bold]no need[/bold] for yet more housing... Additionally, this area would be of far more value to us as a Nature reserve. The river bank is highly developed through the centre, some soft edging will look better, have greater biodiversity and reduce the flooding risk... Plus who would want to live near Orb anyhow?? THe sulphurous stench that permeates widely through that area would put paid to any chance of long-term residents staying there... Or is there something we should know about Orb???

More housing means move chavs (or immigrants !!). What Newport needs is more leisure facilities and parklands, (oh a probably a few more retirement complexes because a lot more people are living into their old age) not to mention schools and community centres.

More homes and yet there is no sign of work on Friars Walk or City Spires beginning so who would want to live here? The area does stink as well, as does the riverside by the City Bridge and along to the Transporter Bridge.

If you look on BBC news site it has now been announced that it is unlikely Friars Walk will be finished in time for 2010.
City Spires has also been put on hold.
Lots of little houses and flats but nothing
to encourage people to live in the centre of Newport.

Looks like the Visitors for the Ryder Cup are going be out on the street come 2010..
They already have the new Ringland Housing Estate and the Black Crawson Housing estate, why more..
Funny as well how 'R Davis' was so against flats on the 'Hereford Arms' being turned into Flats thread.. It alright for animals to be forced out of there natural habit, for housing, but when Davies' binge drinking establishment is turned into flats he's throwing his toys out of his pram..

Not the fault of Newport Unlimited or Newport Council though. What a suprise. Strange is was supposed to be on schedule a few weeks ago but they now have an excuse The Banking Crisis. The fact that there was not a hope in hell it would be finished seems to be irrelevent. The whole scheme has been badly thought out and badly implimented.
Given th track record of these two organisations is anyone supprised
Any bets we will start shearing Newport Council dropping hints that council tax will have to go up to pay for the mess they caused.

Given the years its taken them to make some pretty simple road layout changes its going to take them about 10 year to finish the rest but in any case they have been way over budget for a long time. They have already been cutting corners and reducing the number off shops & facilities and planning to build more flats for whicch the bottom has dropped out of the market

Has anyone noticed as you come over the new bridge towards Corporation Road and look down towards Monkey Island, there is a fence with a gate. A sign on the gate said "Controlled Tipping". What was tipped there? It would be interesting to know. What might the developers come up against? Might just be me being paranoid...

Interesting news about Friars Walk. Bad news just after the elections!!!!!! Mmmmmmmmmmm. Can't help wondering how long they have known but not shared the news with voters!! Of course it may all be coincidence.

Can you imagine what the traffic congestion is gonna be like once all these houses along the Usk are occupied (I'm assuming at least half of the tennants will be car owners.)
