Buried down winding lanes between Caerleon and Usk, The White Hart in the pretty village of Llangybi guarantees a warm welcome and delicious food.

The picturesque pub building dates from the 12th century and, for those who like a bit of history with their food, it was part of Jane Seymour's wedding dowry.

But the menu shows no signs of being stuck in the past.

Simple classics like griddled bream sit alongside more original concoctions like the zingy chilli ginger mussels which I enjoyed.

These came in a light coriander and white wine broth which, though fiery, complemented the delicate seafood taste.

My friend's tiger prawns with Asian greens and rice was also full of flavour.

Her grilled sea bass came with sweet and sour peppers and an oriental-inspired lime chilli-coriander dressing, and was perfectly cooked.

My pappardelle with zucchini ribbons, crab, prawns and chive butter was among the tastiest pasta dishes I have ever eaten.

Its fresh flavours were enhanced by a sinful-tasting richness and despite the generous portion, I had to be forcibly stopped from licking the plate at the end.

The menu is dominated by seafood dishes and when you taste the quality of the fish it is clear why.

But carnivores can opt for dishes like like lemon and herb chicken or rump steak.

Vegetarian dishes included Caerphilly cheese, leek and potato rosti with poached egg and vegetables.

The pub's homemade desserts are also a treat.

The lemon tart was creamy but not oversweet and hazlenut parfait was a refreshing way to finish.

An average three courses would cost around £20 - great value for the quality of the meal.
