BILLED as Usk's best kept secret, The Rat Trap restaurant and
hotel, hidden away in the lanes at Llangeview, is a place well
worth discovering.
You order your food from the menu in the comfortable, rustic
surroundings of the bar, before being taken to your seat in the
elegant dining room once your starter is ready.
I opted for the spicy parsnip soup to start, while my friend
had fishcakes.

My soup was pleasantly piquant and piping hot, and both dishes
were delicious and filling.
For main course I had the belly of pork, which came served on a
bed of leek and mashed potato, while my friend had the noisette
of lamb.
I was slightly disappointed with my pork, which was more fat
than meat.
Although the small amount of meat I had was perfectly cooked
and seasoned, I had hoped for more.
My friend enjoyed his meal immensely, and said his lamb was
sepremely tasty and tender.
For dessert I had my favourite dish, profiteroles, and the
delicious combination of rich chocolate and smooth cream
immediately made me feel better about my meal.
My friend indulged in something just as unhealthy and
irresistable, a luxurious slice of sherry cherry trifle, which
he had trouble finishing.
The bill, with drinks, came to a reasonable £62.20.
With such excellent food and efficient service, the Rat Trap is
unlikely to stay a secret for very long.
I went here for a meal a few months ago. NEVER AGAIN! We both had starters which were OK. I had fish for my main which was overcooked and dry. I ordered a side of "real chips" they turned out to be frozen - yuk. I was very disapointed and didn't think it was worth £20 let alone the £50 that we forked out.
