ARGUS COMMENT: Where is our 'vital' rail link?
WE'RE not surprised at how popular the Ebbw Vale to Cardiff line has been since it opened four months ago.
Figures released today show more than 200,000 passengers have used the line, exceeding targets set by the Assembly in its first four months - smashing Assembly targets for the number of people set to use it.
We are pleased it is proving so popular.
However, we must not let these encouraging figures cloud the real need for the opening of the Ebbw Vale to Newport line, of which there is still no firm news.
Delays over this link illustrate nothing more than a lack of will.
We have lost track of the number of reasons given to us over the years as to why the link could not be opened at the same time as Cardiff.
The rail link between Ebbw Vale and Newport is vital.
We firmly believe the link between the valleys town and Newport should have been completed at the same time as that to Cardiff.
Ebbw Vale has much more of a natural affinity with Newport.
It is vital that residents in the north of Gwent have easy access to the jobs being created through the regeneration of Newport city centre.
The clamour for the link is as loud now as it was when we launched our campaign five years ago and the need for this line is still as vital.

Am i the only person who isn't bothered if the provide a link to Newport? I'll never use it. I have everything i need in Newport. If god forbid i had to travel up that way, i'd use my car and certainly not travel by train.

"Ebbw Vale has much more of a natural affinity with Newport"
Obviously. That`s why we`re all flocking to Cardiff

Why do we have to have a rail link to newport?, Newport is a poor mans Cardiff and its full of chavs, like the poster above.

Hey get this wacky idea - just because YOU don't want it doesn't mean other people don't.
I am getting sick and tired of repeating the OBVIOUS answers to this puerile rubbish every time an Ebbw link article is posted.
You may irrationally hate Newport - but you know? It's a junction to the Great Western Main Line and Marches Line.
Other places in Britain! They really exist! Cardiff is not the centre of the universe.

Have you seen them on a Friday or Saturday night?

Once again this issue rears its head and once again the uneducated masses question the need for such a link. May I repeat that not everyone who works in Newport actually lives in Newport. So we drive from Crosskeys, Newbridge, Risca etc. The current rail link passes through Newport without actually stopping there. Even a little station around the back of the Argus office would suffice, where the branch line meets the main line. It would eradicate all the traffic on Risca, Bassaleg and Forge roads in the morning and evening, and is better for the environment. Can people please get their head around this basic concept?

It appears that Mr Bump is the sort of clown who proves the fact that those of us living in the valleys have always had a natural antipathy to "townies". Believe me, if this clown ever takes it into his head to travel north from Nooo-pooort then I think it'll be time for us all to evacuate. Idiot. Oh, and if any of these words are too big for you to understand, I'll re-post using words of one syllable. Prat.

Your logic runs as follows - some people want a service, other people don't, therefore we shouldn't have the service.
My argument is that if people want it, it should be provided. I'm not forcing anyone to use it.
Please buy a book on elementary logic.

As someone who uses the train from Ebbw Vale to go East a link to Newport would be brilliant and save me 30 minutes of wasted travel time where i have to go Cardiff and double back.

A slow bus service that doesn't integrate with the wider rail network is not a comparable "service".

I do all my shopping in Cwmbran, It's parking is free don't you know? Why would i want to travel into Newport, to catch a bus to X Key's Newbridge, Ebbw Vale, when i can hop in my car and get it all done in an hour? There is nothing up that way, Apart from Blackwood. I'd still use my car to get there though.

Can I just say that I would love for the rail link between Ebbw Vale and Newport to be opened. Working in Newport and living in Newbridge as I do it would be great to just jump on the train and take a quick 5 min strole to my office everyday. Take alot of stress out of travelling. I must apologise for some of the comments made by some of my fellow Valley dwellers. We're not all bad.
