Calzaghe: I may fight Pavlik after Jones
 |
| BOMBSHELL: Joe Calzaghe may go for Joe Louis' world record |
TWO-WEIGHT world champion Joe Calzaghe has slammed reports he's vacated his WBO super middleweight title, sensationally revealing to the Argus that he may opt to fight Kelly Pavlik in 2009.
And Calzaghe, 36, has even suggested he might yet make a run at Joe Louis' record for the longest title reign in boxing history, Louis a champion for 11-years and eight months between 1937 and 1949.
Reports surfaced on the internet yesterday that Calzaghe had relinquished his WBO title, a belt he has held for 10 years, nine months and six days since beating Chris Eubank. However, the number two rated pound-for-pound fighter on the planet has angrily rejected the notion that he's turning his back on the WBO belt, despite the fact his next fight against Roy Jones Jr is likely to be contested at light heavyweight.
Argus columnist Calzaghe revealed he is still undecided on the future and may well return to the 12 stone division for a mouth-watering clash with Pavlik. He explained: "I read on the internet that I have vacated my title and to be honest I am absolutely shocked that it's being reported, where has it come from?
"Giving up the WBC title - won from Mikkel Kessler - is one thing, but I have always had great pride in the longevity of my title reign.
"I am getting to the point where it's one of the longest in boxing history.
"I have never said for certain that I will retire after fighting Roy Jones Jr.
"It's in my mind that I might, but by the same token a lot of people really want to see me fight Kelly Pavlik.
"If that were to happen it would be at super middleweight, so I definitely, categorically don't intend to vacate my WBO title."
Calzaghe's revelation will send shockwaves through the sport of boxing with everyone in the media under the impression that his next fight will be his last.
"I have always stressed that I want to go out of top, don't want to be one of those fighters who goes on too long," Calzaghe said.
"However, if I knock out Roy Jones and still feel hungry and have the desire to continue, then I would do so.
"It's all about who is left out there for me to fight and Kelly Pavlik for one would be really interesting.
"That is why I am so upset about these reports, it baffles me where such information would come from."
Calzaghe made headlines around the world last month by revealing his split from long-time promoter Frank Warren.

Glad you read my comment in response to your Argus column on Friday, Joe (lol).
Just to recap I said that RJJ at The Garden followed by Pavlik at the Millennium Stadium in 2009 would be the perfect send-off.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do!
