Abercarn's scorcher
 |
| SOLID START: Newport's Imran Hassan on his way to 64 against Sudbrook |
ABERCARN won their local derby against Cross Keys in Division Two of the Thomas, Carroll Welsh Club Cricket Conference with Mel Martin and Scott Williams leading the way.
Keys batted first and nobody made a great impression with the bat as they limped to 151 all out. Williams took 3-15, Martin 2-21 and Lee Goodall 2-20.
Williams (24) and Jeremy Parsons (23) gave Abercarn a decent start but it was Martin who led them to a four-wicket win with a superb 56 not out.
Steve Gregory took 2-19 for Keys, Dil Morgan 2-28 and Graham Davey 2-42.
Great Western won their local derby against Blaengarw at Newbridge Fields, the game between Pontnewynydd and Pentwyn was cancelled and winning the toss helped Newbridge to victory at Pencoed.
They put the home side in on a very damp wicket and then dismissed them for 99.
Dean Oram scored 28 as Lee Tyler took 3-18 off nine overs, Ryan Hawkins 3-22 and John Barrett 2-7 off eight tight opening overs.
Opener Jon Wellington got 22 early in the Newbridge innings and captain Chris Jones dug in for a match-winning 46 as his side reached 100-5 in the 41st over. Rhys Morgan took 2-22 off 10 overs for Pencoed.
Abertillery were skittled out for 80 at Tredegar and Andy Poole made 46 of those as Tim Morris took 3-5 off 2.2 overs, Andrew Evans 3-6 off three and Robert Jenkins 2-28 off 10.
Lee Herring netted a brisk 34 and Ian Pembrey got 25 not out as Tredegar reached 81-1.
John Denney (55) and Jon Prince (47) were the mainstays of the Caerleon innings of 204-8 at home to Pontllanfraith, for whom Chris Jones took 3-37 off 10 overs and Jamie Johnston 2-40 off 10.
But Pontllanfraith slumped to 51 all out in their reply as Jamie Evans took 4-3 off 6.5 overs and Colin Davies 3-17 off 10.
Dinas Powys defeated Christchurch by 63 runs and Brynmawr lost at Llantwit Major. Vince McGriele was their top scorer with 42 not out as Brynmawr made a respectable 222-9. John Cheal took 3-36 off 10 overs and two maidens for the Cavaliers.
But Julian Griffiths was in peerless form for Llantwit Major and cracked a brilliant 104 not out, and with Shane Callard scoring 54 as well, they passed the Brynmawr total for the loss of three wickets.
Girling-Croesyceiliog were bowled out for 102 by visitors Lisvane III. Only Tom Curran (32) got any runs as Nick Haincock took 3-32 off 10 overs and David Hunjam 3-12 off seven.
Richard Bowen's 21 not out proved invaluable for Lisvane and they replied with 103-7. Rhodri Birchley took 2-17 off six overs for Girling-Croesyceiliog, Andy Beal 2-23 off six but there was little luck for Paul Murphy, whose 10 overs cost only 16 runs, and Ieuan Wakefield, who conceded just six runs off seven overs.
Matthew Veal made 27 and Richard Evans 25 in the Crumlin score of 162 all out at home to Whitchurch Heath III. Malcolm Pearce took 3-20 for the visitors and John Ghufran 2-20.
But Evans then turned bowler to take 3-15 and Dominic Green had 3-19 as Heath were toppled for 70.
Panteg III made 180 all out at Bedlinog in the Alliance Division One with Mark Collins scoring 54 and John Taylor 49 as Andrew Jones took 4-24 for the home side and Dean Cadwallader 3-24.
But Andrew Jones got 63 for Bedlinog and Lyn Jones saw them to victory by eight wickets with 53 not out.
Huw Kear captured 4-7 as Cwmbran Woodlands dismissed Cynon Valley for 59 but Cwmbran had Mostyn Lewis to thank as his 24 stopped the rot and they eventually reached 60-6.
Gary Smith scored 86 not out and Scott Moore 35 as Maesycwmmer made 223-3 at home to Undy & Magor, for whom Brian Webber took 2-40 off 10 overs.
Huw James got 36 and Lee Boast 41 but Undy & Magor closed on 146-8 with Moore taking a fine 5-24 off 10 overs for Maesycwmmer.
Dean Wallace got 31 and Andrew Taylor 27 as Sudbrook III reached 152-6 at home to Tonyrefail & Edmundstown, for whom James Long took 3-24 off 10 overs and Adam Hembrow 1-21 off 10.
Hembrow (27) and Ed Rees (21) threatened but Tim Bond took 3-28 for Sudbrook III off 6.2 overs and Gordon Voke had 1-18 off six as the visitors were dismissed for 120.
Shane Jones got the biggest score of the day - a magnificent 151 not out - for Llanhilleth at home to Pontypridd III in the Alliance Division Two.
Tony Jones chipped in with 41 as Llanhilleth set a target of 273-5. The visitors could only manage 196-6.
